Our client is a Tier-1 global player in commercial insurance domain.
BUSINESS CHALLENGE
Our client needed to move their core application from on-premises mainframe to AWS. The NEXTGEN Z900 series mainframes hosted all the tiers of the application. DB2 Z/os was the core database with 9 TB of data, while the middle servers were running on Zlinux. As the application was serving six continents from New Zealand to North America, this gave just a small downtime to migrate the data, 90 percent of which were Binary Large Objects. Transfers were thus suboptimal, and benchmarking was challenge due to the heterogenous nature of the source and target systems.
We converted the database from DB2 Z/os to DB2 UDB on linux on-premises in the first phase that took 6-12 months. In the next phase lasting three months, we created EC2 instances and restored data to UDB on the EC2 instances. The Frontend was moved from IHS to Apache, and where possible, we converted, existing Websphere for Middleware to microservices and tomcat to leverage open source cost benefits. Close to 50 percent conversion was done using the ‘side-by-side’ migration approach. Additionally, the Cloud environment allowed the benefit of deploying open source products such as microservices and tomcat for MW.
PAS consolidation and transformation helped achieve below benefits -
USD 30 Mn cost saving in three years
20% saving CPU overhead due to use of EBS snapshots with traditional backup – against a 20% burden for 12 hours during online backup
Significant reduction in time-to-market – due to deployment of Hadoop and DynamoDB for big data services
